When Are Dental Implants A Good Idea?
Posted on July 2nd, 2021
Dental implants are used to replace missing or severely damaged teeth. Often, people lose teeth due to gum disease, injury, decay, etc. When this happens, many risk factors come into play that can impact a patient’s oral health.
If the gap between teeth is not filled, dental issues such as shifting, damage to gum tissue and the jaw bone can occur over time. A missing tooth can also impair the way someone talks, chews their food, and even lead to bite misalignment.

Dental implants are essentially artificial roots, or anchors, that are inserted into the jaw bone. These implants are used to hold either a dental bridge or artificial replacement tooth in place. This procedure fills the gap left behind by the missing tooth and eliminates associated dental concerns.
A periodontist can determine whether a patient is a good candidate for dental implants. A patient must have sufficient jaw bone density and gum tissue, since these are what hold the implant in place. Also, the bone and gum tissue must be healthy enough to support the implant. If this is not the case, another restorative procedure might be chosen to restore the patient’s smile.
Dental implants can and are often used to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth, or even an entire set of teeth. Sometimes, if a patient undergoes tooth extraction due to damage, decay, or before a procedure such as jaw surgery, dental implants will be applied later to replace teeth that were extracted.
